A simpler way to end movie Piracy

Posted in: Uncategorized |

I have nothing but hate for the MPAA. Sueing people and making up figures that grossly inflate their losses from piracy is making MPAA one of the most hated groups out there. I however do not condone piracy.

When people watch a good movie then they love to talk about the movies. People blog about them on places like TheMovieBlog  They make it the water cooler talk of the week, usually discussing new good movies is a huge deal with just about everyone.

I was watching Indiana Jones the other day and thought of a brilliant way to end movie piracy.  Imagine your writing a blog or talking to someone about a movie. You Telling people how much it sucked and that’s why you never go to theaters because its a waste of money.  No one agrees with you, in your office, in your blog.  “The movie was great” is all you hear.    What is everyone talking about, you just downloaded the movie and watched it last night.   You just brush it off.

Later on you watch the movie on TV or DVD.  You realize the move you saw was totally different.  The actors were the same, the plot was kind of  the same but what actually happened in the movie was very different the real movie you just watched was very different.  What happend was you watched a fake.  A fake released by the movie makers so you would lose faith in downloading.

Posted in: Uncategorized |

“For the upcoming release of Firefox, Mozilla is preparing Download Day 2008: a campaign to set a world record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours. Participants are asked to pledge to download Firefox 3 on the day that it’s launched. The exact date hasn’t been scheduled yet, but everything seems on track for June.”

Firefox is a replacement browser for Internet Explorer. It has many more features, usability, bugs and a whole lot more secure than Internet Explorer. Its also much faster. There are thousands of plugins and themes for it which makes it the most customizable web browser available. Best of all its completely FREE.

Right now Firefox stable is at version 2.0 however in the near future the stable version of Firefox 3.0 will be out. It is said that its going to be the greatest web browser ever! I’ve looked at the beta it is simply beautiful. I can’t way for 3.0

Please go to Spread FireFox right now and hit the pledge button to get notified when the new version is available so it can break the world record.

Voicemails

Computer Life SupportThe one thing I can’t figure out in this business. Why do people take the time out of their busy day to leave us messages and submit computer problems, but when we return their call. People don’t answer. We leave a voicemail and never hear back. Most of the time when you call your going to get a live person that answers right away, some times you may have to leave a messages because everyone is on the phone. We always try to call back within 30 minutes or less.

We are here to help you, if you find someone else to work on your computer then please tell us, and make a suggestion on how we can better assist you in the future.

I’m not saying this happens a lot but it does happen and its something I can’t wrap my mind around.  Please comment and tell us why.

We have a couple new techs trained.  I just want to let everyone know that if someone answers the phone that sounds a little nervous and doesn’t have all the answers right away then they are most likely new to us.  The same goes for our new onsite techs.  Don’t worry they are all backed up by us and you will still get the same customer service that we so proudly have.

Vista Problems

Posted in: Vista |

Some users have experienced an audio driver problem after installing Service Pack #1 on their Windows Vista computers.

A Dell Digital Life Liason said, “Should you see this update appear, *do not* install it.”

Many users from the Dell customer forum who installed it says that they see a “Code 10? error after rebooting.

Those who use Windows Vista on an Apple machine using Boot Camp may also be affected. One of the posts at the Apple Boot Camp discussion forum says, “I have a MacBook Pro with SigmaTel sound card, and I was stupid enough to install this update. After installation, sound is gone and Windows started to say ‘no audio output device.’”

“How is it that we obviously cannot trust Microsoft to provide fully tested software pushed by Windows Update?” asked community member Per Nermo from Oslo, Norway, in a Thursday forum post.

Its been busy

Posted in: Uncategorized |

It has been a very busy couple of weeks since my last post.  We’ve setup a couple of VPN systems for our business customers using openvpn.  Everyone loves the system.  We’ve decided to hold off on the monthly memberships for a couple of months while we train new techs.  We want to make sure every customer is getting the support they deserve.   For now we are doing hourly support nationwide which is a challenge in itself since we only work with skilled techs. We won’t send just anyone on a job.  We pride ourselves with having quality service at an affordable price.  We also now have a wholesale supplier for all of our parts so we can offer customers an even bigger discount since we don’t markup hardware.   If your in the Valpo area give us a call and I’ll personally meet with you to show you what we can do for your business.

Flash drives & Programs

Posted in: Uncategorized |

Had a home business customer today having problems opening powerpoint. It would quickly open but then would suck up 99% cpu and do nothing else. After a quick reinstall of Microsoft Office he still had the problem. As I was troubleshooting this and coming up short on google I had him create another user on his XP machine. Logged in as the new user and powerpoint opened just fine. I figured it might be a temp directory problem. Emptied that and still came up with 99% cpu usage. I looked in his recent documents for .ppt files. I saw a bunch that pointed to an e:\ drive. He is opening documents right from a flash drive.

I took a stroll through the registry and found the key that powerpoint uses to store recently opened files. Deleted the tree. Powerpoint opened just fine.

The reason for this issue is simple. When you open powerpoint it first brings up a list of recent presentations. His computer was looking for these documents but because the flash drive was not plugged in It couldn’t find them and just never timed out. He was using office 2000 and come to think of it I have seen similar issues with flash drives and different types of documents and programs. I’m doing some testing to see if this problem crops up on any newer versions of office or windows.

Email

Posted in: email |

It was very busy yesterday.  We had quite a bit of email problem calls yesterday.  Seems like there might be some kind of virus/spyware/exploit going around that attacks outlook express.  No need to worry, the customers that called about problems have been moved over to ThunderBird email.  You can get it from mozilla.org.

We didn’t just switch their email over to a totally new program.  We also setup their spam filters in Thunderbird and installed some themes and plug ins we thought could be useful.  Then we gave them a brief overview of different features between outlook express and Thunderbird.

Personally I have always used Thunderbird and think it is much better than Outlook Express.

As always if any of our customers have questions about Thunderbird or their computer in general just call us, email us or chat with us live.  We are here to help you for all your computer needs.
